BIOGRAPHY

Corine PERIER is a French surrealist animal painter born in Paris in 1964. Graduated of Sorbonne University and Beaux Arts of Paris, she has a Master's degree in Art History and Fine Art. She first initiated painting restoration and worked with Parisian antique dealers for 15 years.

Then, rich in experience, she decided in 2009 to devote herself entirely to her own painting.

The artist draws her inspiration from the animal world and her surrealist oil paintings are meticulously executed much like Cabinets of Curiosities, reminiscence of Classical Art while being firmly in Contemporary Art.

Over the years, in a surrealist way, she has created a visual narration about animal world and his connections with the environment, adding to her work a touch of strangeness which is her artistic signature.

Her artwork has been shown in many galleries in Europe and USA and she had her first solo show in France with Galerie Montmartre in Paris in 2011.

She lives and works in Montpellier, France since 2020.

WHY ANIMAL ART?
Flying rabbit

Heroes of childhood and adulthood's world, familiar or exotic, animals are the main characters of my paintings. My surrealist animal art is a tribute to the beauty of animals as well as the richness and complexity of their relationship with the environment.

My artwork is not only based on aesthetic, one must look beyond the images and seek the sense. Even if the animal has a major importance in Classical painting, literature, cartoons or pop culture, telling a long and complex story of wildlife and human crossing, we can't forget the contemporary problem of disappearance of species on a planet in flux.

Through my animal portraits and by creating imaginary creatures, I recreate my own world, in search of a peaceful universe.

TECHNIQUE

Corine Perier paints in oil on canvas or wood panels using the old Flemish technique of glazes which consists in the over-laying of very thin transparent layers of paint.

Her technique comes from her her years spent restoring paintings.

This lends vibrant colors and a unique light which simply cannot be obtained otherwise.

A perfectionist by nature, she develops great patience in working on her animal paintings.

It takes her between 3 and 6 weeks to complete a work not counting the time for research and composition.
